MS Life Manchester 2006
GMEX, Manchester
Saturday 22 and 23 April 2006
This was the place to be to for everyone living with multiple sclerosis to find out the latest about scientific research and alternative therapies.
Everything you needed to know about multiple sclerosis was all in one place at this free event, open to everyone affected by MS.
There was the opportunity to talk to other young people about juggling a social life with the symptoms of MS, and MS nurses were available to discuss the best care options for individual circumstances.
MS Life helped many people through the maze of MS information, providing the opportunity to get the most relevant information for them.
100 exhibitors were separated into 6 zones: research, support, interactive, employment, leisure and mobility.
Within these zones, everything from cookery demonstrations to Reiki sessions were covered, as well as all the information and advice that is currently available for people affected by MS.
For more information about the day, visit the official MS Life convention website.
Independent Living, Alexandra Palace
In late September 2005, Sky's Accessible Service Team made a great impact at the Independent Living event in London. Over 4300 professionals and members of the public attended the event, which took place in the magnificent setting of Alexandra Palace.
Dorothy Brownlie, Sky's Accessibility Service Manager, and Angela Dunn (pictured), a Team Leader on the helpline, spent two days meeting customers and explaining how Sky is endeavouring to provide 'Accessible Entertainment' for its subscribers.
As with previous exhibitions, we were surprised to discover that many visitors to the Sky stand, including some of our existing customers, were not aware of the helpline and the access services we provide, despite an information page in the June issue of the Sky magazine. This makes our presence at these events even more rewarding as the information we provide is always greeted with a positive response.
One couple who attended the Independent Living convention spoke to Angela about information they had received at a previous event. They had approached the stand and explained that, as one had sight loss and the other hearing loss, they found it difficult to enjoy the same movie as they each required different access services to be used.
Angela explained they could use both audio description and subtitles together and advised them of how to do this. The couple returned to the Sky stand at the September event and were delighted to report that they now regularly sit down to enjoy their favourite movies together.
Another couple, Sandra and Barry, also visited the stand. Although they are not Sky customers, they were very impressed by the information given, and have promised to pass the message on to all of their friends who are currently Sky subscribers.
These are just a couple of the great responses we had at Independent Living this September and we'd like to thank everyone who took the time to visit our stand.
