Sky's accessible remote control

Press Release

Sky launches UK's first inclusive remote control for digital satellite

According to the 2001 Census Family Resource Survey, over 10.3 million adults who live in their own home reported difficulties in the ability to lift and carry objects due to reduced mobility and manual dexterity. This problem is probably a lot higher when you consider that there are now over 20 million people in the UK aged 60 Plus.

In response to an obvious need to make things that bit easier, Sky has launched a remote control specifically designed to assist older customers, people with visual impairments and those with limited dexterity: the Sky+ Remote Control - Easy Grip.

It offers all of the familiar features of the iconic Sky+ remote in two variants with different battery door options - either a textured easy grip door or a hand strap option to assist customers with dexterity impediments. Both versions have the additional benefits of:

  • Larger and bolder graphics for easier button identification
  • Raised contoured buttons with more reference points for easier button identification for visually impaired users
  • Increased colour contrast between buttons and remote body
  • Compatible with all Sky+ and Sky boxes
It was shaped by research conducted by Sky in conjunction with Scope at Beaumont College, Age Concern and disability research agency Ricability to meet the needs of customers with both minor impediments and a range of disabilities including motor control and cognitive impairment.

Kay Allen, Disability Affairs Manager of Public Affairs at Sky said: "Sky is the first UK broadcaster to launch an inclusive remote control that specifically addresses problems some viewers have operating their TV remote. Sky+ Remote Control - Easy Grip adds yet another exclusive feature to our range of accessibility services, bringing us another step closer to making Sky the most user-friendly TV service in the world."

Sky+ Remote Control - Easy Grip costs £19.99 (+ £3.50 P&P) for both battery door options. Existing customers can call Sky on 08705 66 33 33 or take advantage of Sky's text phone number 08702 40 19 10. Batteries and instructions are included.

Sky's additional accessibility services include the benefit of subtitles, sign language and audio description across 21 Sky channels. With a dedicated one-stop-shop for customer service, disabled customers can get alternative media and expert advice to suit their needs.
